Helpful Home Moving Checklist

Vacating an existing home and moving into a new establishment is a strenuous experience for many. However, things can be made easy by means of a little bit of planning.

Here is the checklist of things that need to be done while moving home.
Two months before moving:
- If you are interested in hiring a mover, it is important to get an estimate from different packers and movers available in the city. In case you are interested in moving all by yourself, a quotation about costs should be obtained from at least 2 truck rental companies.
- It is important to make plans about the furniture, appliances and other interior furnishings required in the new home.
- This is the right time to make an inventory of all the household goods and other important items that are required in the new home. All waste materials and items can be segregated and discarded in an appropriate manner.
- All estimates and receipts should be duly filed.
- It is important to arrange for transfer of school records.
Six weeks before moving day:
- This is time to contact painters, carpenters, plumbers and other important personnel so that your new home is ready well before the shifting day.
- Apply at the post office, banks and schools for a change of address.
- One should obtain all the medical records from the current doctor or health plan provider.
- It is important to clean all the closets and drawers and discard the clutter.
Three weeks prior to moving day:
- Disconnection of all the utility services should be scheduled.
- Arrange for transportation of household goods by reserving a rental truck on the specified date of shifting.
- Collect all the records that are important including medical and dental files, family and personal records, financial documents, birth certificates, passports, insurance documents and even family photos. It is important to preserve them in a safe location.
- Check with the insurance company that all items that are being transported are insured.
- Proper disposal of items that cannot be carried like inflammable liquids.
- Returning any borrowed items and clearing all the pending bills.
- Notifying creditors about change in address.
